Easter: Can any good come out of guilt?
It’s Easter Weekend. Salvation is possible because of what happened on this weekend 2,000 years ago. If our salvation is secure, why do we feel so guilty so much of the time? Can any good come out of guilt? Philip Yancey suggests that guilt is a gift. That doesn’t sound right, does it? How is guilt a gift? How do we respond to guilt? Are our politicians an example for us? Is the church an example for us? If Jesus is the answer, how does that work?
We don’t like pain, but medical professionals tell us that pain is often our friend. So should we avoid pain, avoid the pain of guilt? Or how do we walk this often painful journey to live a happier and healthier life? A bigger question might be, what does guilt and pain tell us about God and can it possibly be good news?
